New Tamper Evident CRC for the Pharma Market

New tamper evident CRC for the pharmaceutical market from UCP

UCP has developed PP28mm Medi-Loc®, a new child-resistant tamper evident closure for the pharmaceutical market, which has passed the more demanding protocol testing standards for child-resistant packaging under ISO 8317:2003. The company has adapted the Clic-Loc CRC and Vistop tamper-evident ring technology to achieve a significantly more compact closure than originally developed in the 1990’s for the liquid pharmaceuticals market.  This has resulted in a weight saving of some 30%. As the Vistop tamper-evident ring is a separate assembly, closures can be supplied with the tamper ring in a contrasting colour. The closure is also available without the tamper-evident option.

UCP has worked very closely with Boots Manufacturing to provide solutions for both OTC products and for prescription products dispensed in the pharmacy. For the Pharmacy dispensing sector PP28mm Medi-Loc® has been approved to ISO 8317:2003 on a range of cylindrical glass bottles from 30ml – 1 litre. For the OTC market the closure has attained the same accreditation on a range of PET bottles used by Boots Manufacturing for brand leading products such as Nurofen.

The new protocol test standard, which came into force on 1st October, 2005 for filled products in the U.K., differs from the current standard significantly in the testing of adults. Over the past 30 years the test requirement for children has remained largely unchanged but the testing of adults has developed progressively to recognise the consumer familiarity with child-resistant packaging and to take into account the needs of the ever-increasing age profile of the adult population. The age range in the mid- 1970’s was set at 18-45 years of age. Today, it is 18-65 years of age and the new standard alters this to 50-70 years of age.

UCP has always promoted the benefit of top printed user instructions and feels this strategy is fully justified given the new testing regulations for adult consumers. The testing of adults in the 50-70 years age range only is significant, particularly since the percentage pass rate remains the same, which effectively makes the adult test more stringent.
